Comic Book Artistry 101

By Jim on Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Being an artist breaking into the comic book industry is not as easy task to achieve!  Especially when your background is in anime! And merging two totally different art styles is even more challenging! I have been completing my most recent comic book character, TZUNAMI(soo-na-me), and I was given some great advice from well-konwn artist John Romita Jr. at a recent comic book signing. He told me that I had talent, and continuing to practice would be the best way to hone my skills. He also mentioned how there are tons of published books out with design techniques and styles to learn. I took all the pointers he shared with me to heart, but what really stuck with me was the remarkable way he draws his sketches! Watching him work was a sight that many artists would kill to see!

Originality is key when it comes to creating a successful and memorable comic. Sometimes just thinking outside of the box is not enough. It takes fun, weird, strange and exciting storylines, interesting personalities and quirks, eye-catching artwork, and TONS of conflict! Also, input from others familiar in this industry is an extremely important aspect that can give you an idea of how the general public will view your work. And even when you apply all of these components, never expect to become a commodity overnight!

In closing, I’m looking forward to showing off my work to other famous, or should I say infamous artists before the preview of TZUNAMI right here on c0micb00ks.com!
