www.c0micb00ks.com meets John Romita Jr.

By Jim on Monday, June 16th, 2008

Hey Comic fans! Just wanted to stop by the site today and tell everyone that we had the pleasure of meeting John Romita Jr. this past week! John was as polite as he usually is and I must say he was doing alot of sketches for people! John was visiting so we took some time to stop and see him and get some comics signed as well as have a nice conversation with this super artist!

John is often known as the son of John Romita Sr., the artist who followed Steve Ditko in the 60’s on The Amazing Spider-Man comics. However  John Romita Jr. has established himself within the comic industry as one of todays premiere artists. His current work includes the next Amazing Spider-Man issue which will introduce new super villian “Anti-Venom” and the return of the Green Goblin. John has also been working on other recent titles like Captain America Fallen Son, and World War Hulk Issues.

Having the oppurtunity to watch John as he did autographs and sketches for the fans was great. His pencil work was followed by his own Inking and finished with his signature as JRJR. The fans were loving it!

When I handed John a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #208 he couldn’t resist the urge to pick on his own cover art! He reflected on it and laughed as he said it was one of the first Amazing Spider-Man covers that he did the artwork on. He also joked how he was only 18 when he did it! John himself couldn’t resist to notice how much his own art work has improved some 25 years later! Looking at his modern artwork, we just couldn’t argue with him! Those classic Spidey comics have great covers and we as die hard collectors appreciate all those covers, especially the older stuff! Let’s not forget that it was John Romita Jr. who gave us Amazing Spider-Man #238 - The First Apperance of the Hobgoblin - Now that issue has one heck of an Amazing Spider-Man cover, it’s also one of my personal favorites!

The kids who were present made me smile, watching their faces lite up when John would draw them a Spidey or Captain America sketch! You could hear parents whispering, ”He draws Spider-Man” to the kids. It was quite a nice turn out of people, all ages showed up to see John, and he was really great with everyone. John was willing to take pictures, and was offering to draw any charecter for the fans even on the backside of a  white comic book board if they didn’t have their own sketch cover comic! What a guy! John also took the time to do some really nice sketches for us on clean copies of Secret Invasion #1 giving us are own original artwork of Wolverine and Spider-Man! I’ll post a photo sometime this week of John and myself.

In ending it was great to talk to John and listen as he took the time time to give tips and advice to those who willing to ask.  Thanks John Romita Jr, it was great to see you!
